MotoE™: Casadei takes huge title boost as Torres crashes out

The Italian took the victory to snatch the Championship lead from Torres with just one round remaining!

Mattia Casadei (HP Pons Los40) now leads the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship by 21 points after an intense fight for victory ended with another win, and as title rival Jordi Torres (Openbank Aspar Team) made a first mistake of the year with a crash out of contention. With just one round remaining, Casadei now has the upper hand but the title could still go one of three ways as Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE™) now sits one point behind Torres.

Casadei had his hands full on the final lap, as Race 1 winner Andrea Mantovani (RNF MotoE™ Team) fell just 0.072s short of doing the double. It was an Italian podium lockout as Nicholas Spinelli (HP Pons Los40) took 3rd with an incredible last-corner overtake on Hector Garzo (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™).

Casadei meant business as the lights went out in Barcelona for the 2nd time, and the Italian got the perfect launch as he led Mantovani and the at-the-time Championship leader Jordi Torres through Turn 1.

Casadei led the way as the race began to settle but had a fight on his hands with his closest Championship rival. Casadei and Torres swapped paintwork lap after lap as they both took turns leading the way. There was a gaggle of riders following the leaders but none wanted to play a part in the leading scrap.

Mantovani decided he wanted to throw his name into the mix however, the Race 1 winner was completely undeterred by the Championship battle.

The final couple of laps came around quickly and then came a big development in the Championship story as a small mistake for Torres saw him crash out of the lead at Turn 5.

This left Casadei to battle it out with the rest of the field as he got the better of Mantovani to take the win.

You didn't know where to look on that final lap, and out of the blue Nicholas Spinelli pulled out an incredible last-corner overtake to snatch the final rostrum spot.

Who could've predicted that? Race 2 in Barcelona saw a big twist in the title race, and with the next round being the final one for MotoE™ at Casadei's home circuit in Misano, you're not going to want to miss any of the action from Rimini!

Will it be Casadei, will it be Torres, or can Ferrari throw up something special? Find out at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini next up from the 8th -10th of September!
