MotoE™: Mantovani wins as last-lap drama unfolds between title rivals

The Italian fought his way to his 2nd victory as Casadei and Torres made contact on the final lap

Classic last-lap action at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya saw a determined Andrea Mantovani (RNF MotoE™ Team) snatch victory in Race 1. Mattia Casadei (HP Pons Los40) led the way on the last-lap as he made contact with his title rival Jordi Torres (Openbank Aspar Team). Torres dropped down to P7 as Casadei closed in on the Spaniard's Championship lead with an important 2nd place. Hector Garzo (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™) was fully in the mix as well as he rounded out the Race 1 podium.

The lights went out for Race 1 in Barcelona and it was the poleman Jordi Torres that led the way through Turn 1. The Championship leader had Casadei glued to his rear wheel as the battle was about to commence.

Torres led the way as the laps ticked down but the Italian wasn't letting the Spaniard out of his sights as Mantovani began to make moves to put himself into podium contention.

The heat was turned right up for the front four as Torres, Casadei, Mantovani, and Garzo scrapped it out for the top spots.

The last lap quickly came around as the battle raged on. The drama then unfolded at Turn 1 where Casadei was desperate to hit the front ahead of Torres. The Italian moved ahead of the Spaniard and took a tight defensive line into turn 1. This saw the title-fighting duo cross paths, forcing Torres to sit up and run on at Turn 1.

Torres rejoined in P7, meanwhile, the battle for victory was very much still on!

Casadei led the way but it was Mantovani's time to shine as he pushed his way past his compatriot to take an incredible victory with Garzo watching on in 3rd.

Next up for MotoE™ is Race 2 at 16:10 local time (GMT +2). The Championship is set to go down to the wire with the next round being the final one for MotoE™ in Misano. You're not going to want to miss a single second of the action with just four points splitting the top two!
